So I go to an ATM and ask - stupidly for 300 Euros - in which the ATM gave us 3, 100 Euro notes. We tried to scrape together the fair with what we had, and we were short and then i just tried to give the bus driver a 100 Euro note - it was late, we were very tired. He would not take it and just waved us in to the back of the bus - for free.

You can probably get something closer to this elsewhere, and then bank the pounds, rather than trying to insist with Barclays and perhaps making it worse for the cashier who made the mistake. (Personally, I would hang on to the €500 note.)

Don't even go there. 500 euro notes aren't accepted anywhere, only at a bank and they will be highly suspicious because of you being a foreigner. Just get your euro's from an ATM at Schiphol (or any other airport). I would highly advise against purchasing euros in 500 euro
