I attached the replacement sensor and the fault stayed (I'm hoping it's not a lexia job to delete as I don't have one, the ebay ones say not compatible with diesel engines, and the citroen dealer want £100 to plug it in!!!

if you test the sensor when plugged in depending where the crank is you might get 0 volts. the wires in the loom were corroded and dragging the 8 volts from the ecu to ground. To test you should first unplug the sensor and check connector. There should be 0v 8v and 5v. the sensor switches the 8 volt to ground.
